Notes on Route Changes and Current Conditions

The map below shows all official Ice Age National Scenic Trail segments (blue lines; actual trail is marked with yellow blazes) and unofficial connecting routes (green lines; actual routes are unmarked). Notes (if any) on route changes and current conditions are indicated by “push pins” on the map; details for each push pin are shown below the map.

To zoom in, double-click or use the slider on the left side of the map.

The data shown on this map is for general information purposes only. The Ice Age Trail Alliance gives no warranty, expressed or implied, as to the accuracy, reliability, or completeness of these data. It is strongly recommended that only the Ice Age Trail Atlas and Ice Age Trail Companion Guide 2011 be used as official resources for information about the Trail.

As the Ice Age Trail evolves toward completion its route changes over time as volunteers build new sections and other sections are rerouted or closed. Weather and activities such as hunting and land management (e.g., logging) can also alter Trail navigation and access. Pushpins on the map above and detailed comments below (if any) are intended to keep Ice Age Trail users up to date on current Trail conditions and route changes (compared with the Ice Age Trail Atlas and Ice Age Trail Companion Guide 2011).

Superior Lobe:New Trail Segment

Now open: Blueberry Segment

effective date: May 18, 2011

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 10f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 317

A new two-mile stretch of Trail is now open for hiking, snowshoeing and ungroomed cross-country skiing near Birchwood. The new segment helps close a gap between the Hemlock Creek and Tuscobia segments. It was constructed during an MSC event May 11-15, 2011.

The Trail stretches west from the intersection of Loch Lomond Blvd. and Featherstone Dr., crosses the Red Cedar River, and joins with the Tuscobia Segment. East of Loch Lomond and Featherstone is a spur trail to the Village of Birchwood that features the former Blueberry rail grade.

Parking is available at the Big Fish parking lot in Birchwood or roadside along Featherstone Drive. Additionally, a new parking lot serving both the Tuscobia State Trail and the Ice Age Trail was constructed at County T and Highway 48.

Hemlock Creek Segment Conditions Report

effective date: Aug 19, 2011

Ice Age Trail Atlas Map 10f; Ice Age Trail Companion Guide p. 315

The boardwalk on the Hemlock Creek Segment approximately 1.4 miles south of the Finohorn Road trailhead has recently been repaired. Infirm boards have been replaced and much of the slope and tilt caused by heaving has been reduced. However, upon crossing hikers should exercise caution because volunteers were not able to eliminate all of the slope. Wet weather will increase chances of slipping, as is the case on wooden bridge ramps.
